NEW ART EXHIBITS OPEN MARCH 21 AT ILLINOIS CENTRAL COLLEGE

Artists Philip Carey and Etty Yaniv will have works displayed in mixed media art shows opening March 21 in galleries on the Illinois Central College East Peoria Campus.

               The exhibit by Carey, entitled Trashart & Arttrash, will be on display Gallery 336B, located in the Academic Building. A reception from noon to 2 pm and an artist talk beginning at 12:30 pm are both scheduled for March 21 in the gallery.

               In addition, works by Yaniv will be on display in the ICC Performing Arts Center Gallery, located in the lobby of the facility.

               Carey is based in California and describes himself and his art as being autobiographical, colorful, intricate and full of fun. His dream drawings consist of sketches and stories about his bizarre dreams drawn with ink and Prismacolor pencils on 3-inch by 5-inch Post-It notes. The drawings are framed and have been published in four volumes of Dream Drawing books. Carey’s recent work is large in scale created from the ephemera of 40 years as an exhibit designer; 10 years as a kidney disease, heart disease and cancer patient; and 35 years of saving chocolate wrappers and trash collected during recent travels.

               Carey received a bachelor’s degree in exhibit design from California State University at Long Beach. His 40-year career includes working as exhibit designer/installer at the California Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles; director of education and curator of exhibits at the Roberson Museum in Binghamton, New York; and exhibit designer/coordinator for California State Parks in Sacramento. His work has been carried by 20 museums, galleries and shops, including the American Visionary Art Museum; Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago; Smoobage Gallery and Coalesce Book Store in Morro Bay, California; the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin; and the Ilulissat Art Museum in Illulissat, Greenland.

               Yaniv was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently works on her art and art writing in Brooklyn. She holds bachelor’s degree in psychology and English literature from Tel Aviv University, a bachelor of fine arts degree from Parsons School of Design and a master of fine arts degree from SUNY-Purchase. She integrates media such as drawing, photography and painting to form immersive environments. Her work has been printed in publications such as The New York Times, Village Voice, Newsday magazine and The Nation. She has been featured in solo and group shows at galleries and museums nationally and internationally, including The Haifa Museum of Art in Israel; Newark Museum of Art in New Jersey; Torrance Art Museum in California; Storefront Ten Eyck in Brooklyn; Helen Day in Vermont; the Art Gallery of St. Albert in California; Zero1 Biennial in San Francisco; Western Illinois University; Leipziger Baumwollspinnerie in Leipzig Germany and more.

            Both exhibits at ICC run through April 13.          

            Hours of operation for the Performing Arts Center Gallery are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm, and Friday from 9:30 am to noon. The gallery is also open during public events in the Performing Arts Center.

            Hours of operation for Gallery 336B are Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Friday from 9 am to noon.

            Operation of the ICC art galleries varies with ICC’s holidays and breaks.

            The exhibits are presented by the ICC Art Program and the Arts at ICC. The Arts at ICC has a rich history of enhancing the arts community and expanding education beyond the classroom. Arts at ICC presents more than 500 exhibits, performances, lectures, rehearsals, meetings, master classes, clinics, seminars, receptions, orientations, forums, auditions and tournaments annually.
