Serena Page, P.E., PLS, a civil engineer at Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Peoria office, recently became a licensed professional land surveyor in Illinois. Page joined Hanson in 2010. She has provided surveying and engineering services for projects, including the base roadway repairs for the Illinois Air National Guard’s 182nd Airlift Wing and the study and design of the Washington Street reconstruction, both in Peoria; planning for the Seminary Street overpass in Galesburg for BNSF Railway Co.; and a design survey for the Monroe County Airport’s runway rehabilitation in Bloomington, Indiana, as part of the facility’s sinkhole repairs. Page received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois. ICC “Between the Lines” Program Examines Jackie Chan and the Western Hero Feb. 5

Join Illinois Central College’s “Between the Lines” program as it explores Jackie Chan and the Western Hero on Mon., Feb. 5 at 2:30 pm in Room 212C/D on the East Peoria Campus. Facilitator for the discussion is Marsha Watson.                Jackie Chan is perhaps the biggest Asian mega-star many Americans have never heard of. If American audiences do recognize his name, it is most often for comedic, martial arts/buddy films such as Shanghai Noon and Rush Hour . Western audiences more familiar with Chan’s film work also will recognize him from classic martial arts films such as Drunken Master I and II or Police Story 3: Supercop . PHILHARMONIC CHORALE, IN RESIDENCE AT ILLINOIS CENTRAL COLLEGE, HOSTS OPEN REHEARSALS IN JANUARY

The Philharmonic Chorale, in residence at Illinois Central College, will host open rehearsals during the month of January on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 pm in Room 121A of the Academic Building, located on the ICC East Peoria Campus.             Singers who are high school graduates or older are welcome to join the Philharmonic Chorale. The purpose of the group is to perform, promote and encourage choral music. The Philharmonic Chorale has been in existence since 1925.             The spring concert of the Philharmonic Chorale’s 93rd season is scheduled for Sun., May 6 at 2:30 pm in the ICC Performing Arts Center. Illinois Central College S.I.G.N. Club will host its 6 th Annual “Deaf Idol 2018” on Fri., March 9 from 7 to 9 pm, in the ICC Performing Arts Center on the East Peoria Campus. The event features contestants from the deaf community performing songs, stories, poetry, skits and more in American Sign Language for a grand prize. Judges will select the top three winners for the evening. The application process is now open for Illinois American Water’s 2018 Environmental Grant Program. The program supports innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds through partnerships. Diverse activities like watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, biodiversity projects, wellhead protection and hazardous waste collection efforts are supported through grants of up to $10,000. "Since 2009, we’ve contributed over $175,000 to 46 Illinois water protection projects. Well over 100 chamber members and guests were on hand for the official grand opening of UnityPoint Health - Pekin East on January 18. The new state of the art building is located on the corner of Veterans Drive and Griffin Avenue. The new facility will bring together primary care providers and pediatricians under one roof. By having them all in one building, along with x-ray and lab services, accessing care will be more convenient. The third floor will be home to the UnityPoint Health specialty practices, including an Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist, among others. UnityPoint Health - Pekin East is a 52,000 square foot building with three stories. Each floor includes 26 exam rooms and two procedure rooms. In addition, the first floor will include a community area providing space for health education classes, physician presentations and meeting space. Illinois Central College will offer a spring session of its course to prepare individuals for employment as a pharmacy technician. The pharmacy technician course is 12 weeks of classroom instruction, which will give students a solid foundation in the skills necessary for employment as a pharmacy technician and will prepare students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam.  The pharmacy technician classes will be held on Mondays, beginning February 26 through May 21, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Hickory Hall on the ICC Peoria Campus, located at 5407 N. The 20th edition of the R. David Tebben Community Leadership Academy began on January 11th, as 22 students met for the first session.  In addition to a welcome and orientation, the students got to know each other through a speed-networking exercise. The 10-week program meets twice each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. First held in 1999, the leadership academy was launched by the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce as a means to identify and develop future leaders for the chamber and other organizations in the community.  The topics, speakers, and tours are all determined by a volunteer committee of leadership academy graduates. UnityPoint Health and Pekin First Church of the Nazarene are both sponsors of the 2018 academy. The program culminates with a graduation banquet in  March. Hopedale Medical Foundation is again accepting applications from high school seniors and college freshmen for its Spring 2018 Scholarship Awards.  The Foundation has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to area students since 1980. Commonwealth Edison Awards Illinois Central College, Community Partners $1M to Launch Solar Technicians Training Program

Thanks to a $1 million grant from Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), Illinois Central College, along with more than 15 community organizations and businesses, will offer a program designed to build a workforce training program for solar technicians. ICC will serve as fiscal and lead agent for the Central Illinois Solar Workforce Pipeline Training Program , with Illinois People’s Action/Heaven’s View Community Development Corp. and Tri-County Urban League acting as key partners. ComEd announced it selected four organizations to develop and conduct solar pipeline training programs through $3 million in grants funded by the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA). ICC Art Program Hosts 2018 Portfolio Day Event for Area High School Juniors and Seniors January 26

Area high school juniors and seniors are invited to showcase their original works of art in a juried show for a chance to win prizes in the 2018 Illinois Central College Art Portfolio Day, sponsored by the ICC Arts and Behavioral Sciences Department Art Program. Students may enter up to three pieces of original artwork that have been completed within the past two years. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork will be accepted. Two-dimensional artwork should be matted and must have proper wire or hooks for hanging; no works will be accepted with wire or string taped to the back. The Portfolio Day event takes place January 26 from 3 pm to 5 pm in Gallery 131D, located in the Academic Building on the East Peoria Campus. Illinois Central College Offers Accelerated Course in Crappie Fishing Strategy This Spring

This spring, Illinois Central College Adult Community Programs will partner with Crappie University to offer an accelerated course in crappie fishing for all skill levels. The four-week course will meet on Tuesday nights, Feb. 13 through March 6, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Arbor Hall Auditorium on the Peoria Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria.                Participants will learn from pros and guides who make a living catching crappie. Instructors will discuss all the latest fishing techniques, from spider rigging and long-lining, to pushing crank baits and dock shooting.  All sessions are relevant to fishing in local waters and in a variety of conditions, ranging from fishing shallow to deep throughout the season.                Crappie University was established in 2015 in Oklahoma to educate anglers nationwide about crappie fishing. ILLINOIS CENTRAL COLLEGE OFFERS S.A.T. PREP CLASSES AND INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS

Illinois public high schools are now required to administer the SAT to high school juniors instead of the ACT or PARCC exams. Illinois Central College will offer an SAT Prep Course, consisting of four, three-hour sessions to help students prepare for the SAT test, as well as an informational session for students and their parents or guardians on this transition. All SAT Prep course sessions and the Introductory Night will be held at Hickory Hall on the ICC Peoria Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria. Participants must register to take the SAT exam separately. The sessions meet in the two weeks prior to each of the SAT test dates scheduled throughout this spring. The next session begins Feb. 26 for the exam scheduled on March 10. Students may wish to take the test more than once to try to improve their scores.
