BBB: Exclusive Business News and Tips TORCH EDITION

Exclusive Business News and Tips TORCH EDITION

Many thanks to you for making the 19th Annual Torch Awards a HUGE success!

This was our biggest year yet with 60 nominated businesses and nearly 200 people in attendance. The Torch Award is designed to promote not only the importance of ethical business practices, but the willingness and efforts made by outstanding businesses to ensure that our marketplace remains fair and honorable. Each recipient has exemplified excellence in ethical business practices.

Special Guests

We were fortunate to have two very special guests: Zach McAllister, a central Illinois native, from the Dodgers organization and Homer from our very own Peoria Chiefs.

The Winners!

Category 1: CT Gabbert Construction & Remodeling
Category 2: Sherman's
Category 3: Avanti's
Jeff Bell Customer Service Award: Spencer Schubach of Fox Services Express
Partners in Trust: Alpha Media
Truth in Advertising: Academy of Screenprinting & Awards
Community Impact Award: Dream Center Peoria
Patron of Integrity: Tom Simpson of AAA Confidential Security Corp

What are these awards you say? The category is split up by the number of employees in the company. Each business must be nominated and fill out the questionnaire to send to our judges. Judges are chosen from past winners or by our team at the BBB. Category one is 1 to 24 employees, category two is 25 to 180 employees, and category three is any company with over 181 employees.

The Jeff Bell Customer Service Award is open to any Accredited Business to recognize an employee who goes above and beyond in the area of customer service. Partners in Trust is awarded a local media organization that helps us spread the information from the BBB. Truth in Advertising means that the business excels in several medias for advertising and advertise honestly. The Community Impact Award is new this year that will go to an Accredited Charity for their work in the community and meet the BBB's charity guidelines. The Patron of Integrity is chosen by the CEO/President to recognize one particularly outstanding business person that has helped the BBB's mission.

Be on the lookout for the opportunity to nominate a business for next year starting in August!

Illinois American Water Encourages Customers to Participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Oct. 27, 2018

Illinois American Water encourages customers to participate in the Drug Enforcement
Agency’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Residents are encouraged to drop off their unwanted medications at approved collection sites so they can be incinerated, which is the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recommended approach for pharmaceutical disposal. Flushing medications down the toilet and throwing them in the trash are discouraged.

The event is Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Collection sites participating in this event can be located by visiting
“This event is a great opportunity for residents to securely drop off any unused or expired medications,” said Bruce Hauk, Illinois American Water President. “It’s important for us to keep these items out of our landfills and water supplies as well as the hands of those who may misuse or abuse them.” Hauk added, “We encourage those who cannot participate during this DEA event to continue to use their community pharmaceutical disposal programs to properly dispose of their unwanted medications. Through all of these efforts we can protect not only our water but our community as a whole.”

Through partnership and collaboration with local pharmacies, environmental stewards, police departments and government officials, Illinois American Water has helped to implement permanent pharmaceutical disposal programs across the state. These programs are located in Alton, Bartonville, Belleville, Caseyville, Champaign, Chillicothe, Collinsville, Columbia, Dixon, East Alton, Edwardsville, Fairmont, Freeburg, Glen Carbon, Madison, Maryville, Mt. Carroll, Mt. Vernon, O’Fallon, Orland Hills, Pekin, Peoria, Peoria Heights, Pontiac, Red Bud, South
Beloit, Sterling, Streator, Urbana and Waterloo.

The pharmaceutical disposal programs were created through a model developed by Pontiac Township High School students and their teacher Paul Ritter. The program, P2D2, has been recognized as a model for all pharmaceutical disposal programs. Through P2D2’s efforts, millions of pounds of unwanted medications have been collected and disposed of properly. To learn more about P2D2 please visit

2018 was again a very successful season of concerts on the Peoria Riverfront! Ticket sales for the 3 of the largest music series (Spring Fling, Tailgate N’ Tallboys, River City Soul Fest) in central Illinois topped over 40,000 tickets sold! Over 30 states were represented at the concerts this summer, with an increasing percentage of “out-of-towners” coming in to enjoy the festivities. According to economic impact calculations from the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the 10 dates brought in an estimated $5,114,796 (MILLION) in to the local economy. The calculations take into consideration money spent in our area on food, retail, fuel, accommodations and entertainment outside of the event. 2018 headliners and support included: Stone Sour, Stone Temple Pilots, Sevendust, Chase Rice, Kane Brown, Old Dominion, Charlie Daniels, Cody Jinks, Lee Brice, Joe Nichols, Nelly, Jon Pardi, Sawyer Brown, Whitey Morgan, Jerrod Niemann, Ja Rule, Ashanti and Chingy. There were over 30 additional bands included in the show dates.
With the success of year 2 in the books, Inked Entertainment, in conjunction with the Peoria Park District, is already setting their eyes on growing the events in 2019. Rock 105.7 the X Spring Fling, River City Soul Fest and other big-name shows will be announced over the next several months.
