Gateway Foundation: Know the Facts

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
This week marks National Drug and Alcohol Fact Week, when organizations work together to shatter myths of alcohol and drug use, especially for teens.

What are some impacts of alcohol and drug misuse?
  • Alcohol and drug use alter brain chemistry and change how the brain performs and interferes with a person’s ability to make choices.
  • On average, 130 Americans die each day as a result of an opioid overdose.
  • 80% of people who use heroin started by misusing prescription drugs.
  • 88,000 deaths each year are attributed to alcohol use, making it the third leading preventable cause of death.
The effects of drug and alcohol abuse are felt beyond the person using and their loved ones. Substance misuse and abuse impacts the workforce, including the legal and medical fields.
