Chamber Board Supports Illinois Fair Map Amendment

At their February 10, 2010 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce approved the following policy statement:

The Board of Directors of the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce believes that, as currently designed, Illinois’ redistricting process is inherently unfair, overly partisan, and not in the best interests of the business community or the public good in general. It should be replaced through a Constitutional Amendment with a system that meets the current Constitutional criteria, but is also:
  • More independent of the legislature and Governor
  • Less partisan
  • Does not take into account incumbency or voting habits of the populace
  • Complies with federal laws on voting

The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors believes that the IL Fair Map Amendment strives to improve Illinois’ system and meets the objectives above. Further, the Board of Directors:

  • Will sign on with other partners to support the IL Fair Map Amendment
  • Direct the staff to educate members about the issue and encourage them to support the amendment
  • Actively circulate petitions in the effort to get 500,000 signatures by May 1, 2010
