Center for Prevention of Abuse Receives Accreditation to Offer State-Mandated Domestic Violence Training for Licensed Cosmetologists and Estheticians

New Illinois law from the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
requires one-hour training for beauty specialists

The Center for Prevention of Abuse (CFPA) now offers certified domestic violence training to all cosmetologists, cosmetology teachers, estheticians, esthetic teachers, hair braiders, hair braiding teachers, nail technicians, and nail technology teachers in Central Illinois seeking licensure renewals. The new Illinois law requires a one-hour, one time continuing education (CE) course for cosmetology licensees, effective January 1, 2019.

“Cosmetologists, estheticians, nail technicians, and others in the beauty industry are in a unique position to receive or hear domestic violence or sexual assault disclosures,” said Carol Merna, Chief Executive Officer at the Center for Prevention of Abuse. “Educating those in contact with survivors about indicators of domestic violence and sexual assault, how to safely respond, and about available resources is an important step in supporting survivors in our community. As a leading victim-service agency, the Center for Prevention of Abuse is proud to have received our state accreditation so we can help cosmetologists in Central Illinois meet this state mandate.”

The domestic violence CE requirement is in effect for the September 2019 licensure renewals for all cosmetologists and estheticians. The training is one hour in length, costs $20 per person, and is offered at CFPA’s Peoria location at 720 W. Joan Ct. CFPA services for all survivors of abuse are free and confidential and the crisis hotline is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-559-SAFE (7233).
