Illinois Central College S.I.G.N. Club Presents “Deaf Idol 2018” on March 9
Illinois Central College S.I.G.N.
Club will host its 6th Annual “Deaf Idol 2018” on Fri., March 9 from
7 to 9 pm, in the ICC Performing Arts Center on the East Peoria Campus. The
event features contestants from the deaf community performing songs, stories,
poetry, skits and more in American Sign Language for a grand prize. Judges will
select the top three winners for the evening.
This year, nationally recognized
music interpreter Amber Galloway Gallego, from Houston, Texas, will service as
celebrity judge; along with JoAnn “Jo Rose” Benfield, an actress/music
interpreter and an advocate for the deaf; and Sam Harris, a deaf interpreter
during the hurricanes in Florida.
“We are excited to have Amber back
with us once again this year and are delighted to welcome JoAnn and Sam to help
us celebrate our sixth year of Deaf Idol at ICC,” said ICC Adjunct Faculty and
S.I.G.N. Club Advisor DiAnn Sances. “This evening is an important one every
year, as it not only provides a unique opportunity to promote and enrich the deaf
community but allows the community as a whole to experience ASL culture in such
a special and creative way.”
ICC’s Interpreter Prep Program 2nd
year students also will be performing a special skit of “Wizard of Oz” in ASL.
There will be two voice interpreters available for the hearing fans in the
audience, and “I Love You” pillows, t-shirts and more will be available for
purchase in the Performing Arts Center lobby beginning at 6pm.
Advanced tickets may be purchased
from any S.I.G.N. Club officer for $5 per adult and children ages 13 and up.
Tickets for children age 12 and under are free. Doors open at 6 pm.
