Illinois American Water’s Pekin District to Invest Approximately $1 Million for Transmission Water Main Installation
Illinois American Water’s Pekin District will invest approximately $1 million to install about 3,200 feet of 16-inch water main along Court Street and adjacent roads in Pekin. The investment will enhance fire protection and water pressure to customers throughout the Pekin District’s service area, including Court Street near Pekin Hospital.
According to Roger Goodson, operations superintendent for the Pekin District, the project will also help to ensure reliable water service to customers. Goodson said, “Upgrading our distribution system is essential to ensuring quality water service. Illinois American Water continues to invest annually in its systems to ensure that local water quality and service continues to be as good as or better than local, state and federal quality standards.”
Weather permitting, work will begin on July 9, 2012 and continue for several months. Illinois American Water is working with the City of Pekin to ensure appropriate traffic detours during construction. Expected road closures include partial closure of Court Street at 12th Street and Easling Court, merging traffic to one lane. Traffic along Park Avenue will also be affected for eastbound traffic from 12th street to 13th street. Other areas which could be affected during construction include Center Street from 13th Street to Easling Court. There will be times during construction that full road closures with only local traffic access will be necessary on 12th Street, 13th Street and Easling Court. Motorists should select alternate routes if possible. Those traveling in the area should use caution and obey traffic signs, detour routes and flaggers.
The U.S. EPA reports that the nation’s water utilities will need to make more than $335 billion in infrastructure investments over the next 20 years to ensure public health. These investments include replacing thousands of miles of pipe and upgrades to treatment plants,
storage tanks and other assets. Illinois American Water’s investment in water main installation in the Pekin District is just another example of continuous investments and improvements being made, helping to meet the demands of today’s customers and planning for the future.
