Center for Prevention of Abuse Hosts Annual 5K Run/Walk
in Honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Early Bird Registration Now Open for 6th annual race on April 8

East Peoria, Ill. – In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April, the Center for Prevention of Abuse (CFPA) is hosting the 6th annual 5K run/1 mile walk, I Run with Survivors, on Saturday, April 8 at 8 a.m. in the Levee District in East Peoria, Illinois. Registration is now open here. Participants can enter code EARLYBIRD5 at checkout to receive $5 off registration through Feb. 28, 2023.

The registration fee for adult walkers and runners is $35 and the fee for participants 17 and under is $20, both include a commemorative t-shirt. Children three years old and younger are not required to sign up and are free to join with family. The course is stroller, wheelchair and pet friendly. Participants are encouraged to wear their t-shirt for the event as well as other teal items to honor Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The first 50 participants to sign up receive a CFPA belt bag. First time racers receive a CFPA water bottle.

New this year, a teal egg hunt is part of the fun for participants after the race! Participants can search along the course for dozens of eggs filled with prizes for all ages. CFPA merchandise, including coffee tumblers, pet bandanas, belt bags and more, are available for purchase on the event website. CFPA encourages participants to ask friends and family to join them at the event or donate money through the online fundraising platform in honor of survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

“The I Run with Survivors 5K and 1 mile walk is an incredible way for people to support, not only CFPA’s mission, but also show survivors of sexual assault they are believed, loved and supported,” said Carol Merna, Chief Executive Officer at the Center for Prevention of Abuse. “Every 68 seconds someone in America is sexually assaulted. This crime occurs far too frequently and casts a long shadow through physical and emotional scars. Our therapy department works hard to provide the best care for our clients and having community support for an event like this is crucial. We encourage and welcome everyone to join us on April 8.”

All the proceeds from registration go toward providing free and confidential services for survivors of sexual assault at CFPA. Race day activities include photo opportunities, music from Mix 106.9, teal egg hunt and refreshments following the race. CFPA services for sexual assault survivors and all survivors of abuse are free and confidential and the crisis hotline is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-559-SAFE (7233). More sexual assault statistics and information can be found on CFPA's infographic or by visiting centerforpreventionofabuse.org.
