Amazon Fulfillment Center to Open Feb 9,
Ribbon Cutting Scheduled
North Pekin, Illinois- Amazon, the world’s largest retailer,
will open its fulfillment center in North Pekin on Thursday, February 9. Their
first day will start with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Pekin Area
Chamber of Commerce at 9 AM at the facility located at 1961 Edgewater Drive
(Illinois Route 98) in North Pekin. Amazon invested millions of dollars to
transform a former warehouse into a 90,785 square foot “last mile” facility.
“The most visible part of Amazon’s transportation network is
our last mile operations, which facilitates package delivery directly to the
customer’s doorstep,” said Caitlin Polochak, Regional Public Relations Manager,
for Amazon.
“While Amazon currently delivers packages via a variety of modes,
deliveries through Amazon’s dedicated last-mile delivery network account for
over 50% of our shipments, both in the U.S. and globally.”
A smaller initial crew of about 30 employees will operate
the facility at opening, with plans to ramp up to about 200 employees within
the year. Identification of a suitable property for Amazon started in 2019 when
Amazon began working with Tom Camper of Joseph & Camper Commercial to
investigate local options. After COVID delayed the search, the facility’s
location was announced in 2021. Work commenced in 2022 and wrapped up just
after the first of the year. “They say that good things come to those that
wait,” said David Zimmerman, Chairman of the Board for Tazewell County, within
which the Center will be located.
“We appreciate how difficult circumstances have been since
the beginning of this project but are so very happy to have Amazon’s facility
open and hiring locals. This is a big win for the Pekin area, and we could not
be more proud of the fact that Amazon chose our community for this facility,”
said Amy Whiting-McCoy, Executive Director of the Pekin Area Chamber of
Commerce.
“Amazon has already proven themselves to be a good corporate
citizen and has worked with the Chamber to identify local service partners and
charitable organizations to support.“ Added Chris Setti, CEO of the Greater
Peoria Economic Development Council: “Amazon chose to make its investment in
Greater Peoria for the same reason so many other companies choose to do the
same – our region boasts logistical advantages that help connect products to
customers and an incredible workforce. We look forward to building a relationship
with Amazon and their management team, and helping them launch their operations
here.”
Media, business and community leaders, and citizens are
asked to welcome Amazon at the February 9 ribbon-cutting ceremony. Questions
