U.S. Chamber Statement on Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

 

Yesterday, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne P. Clark issued the following statement in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine:
 

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a serious breach of international law, a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, and an affront to our steadfast belief in a world where democratic countries, following the rule of law and the free enterprise system, can be free and prosper.

The business community will continue to support the Administration, Congress, and our allies to ensure a swift and meaningful response to Russia’s aggression.”

 

 

 

 

First things first: Earlier this week, we celebrated President's Day and honored the great leaders who dedicated their lives to making our country the safe and free nation it is today. In appreciation for those who laid the groundwork that allows us to express our personal freedoms and embrace entrepreneurshipU.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark shared one of her favorite presidential quotes, from our twenty-sixth President, Theodore Roosevelt: 
 

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood.” He goes on to describe that same man “who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring.”

What the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Offers Small Businesses

 

U.S. Chamber Vice President of Transportation and Infrastructure Ed Mortimer testified  before the House Small Business Committee on the benefits of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
 

Why it matters: The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs act is going to help rebuild America. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is working to ensure that infrastructure investments are steered towards small businesses and jobs creators in communities across America.

Key takeaway: “For more than two decades, we’ve been at the forefront of advocacy for modernizing America’s aging infrastructure... this is bipartisan durable policy that will allow our nation to move forward and allow small businesses to plan, to create jobs, and to grow for 50 years to come.”

How the Pandemic Has Impacted Labor in the Middle Market

 

Last week, U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley, hosted a discussion with Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, to discuss how COVID has impacted the labor market for middle market businesses.
 

Why it matters: The economy is recovering from pandemic-associated job losses. Last quarter there was an average of 541,000 jobs being added each month. But there remain over 10 million unfilled positions throughout the economy. 

The pandemic impacted how employees view their work/life balance, the landscape of legal immigration, and the number of working mothers in the workforce. 
 

•    An average of nearly 4 million workers quit their jobs monthly in 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, up from 3.5 million per month in 2019. 


Bottom line: The shifting landscape of the labor market has businesses revaluating how best to attract employees. Efforts to focus on skills-based hiring, increased immigration, and worker education opportunities can all bring more employees into the workforce.  Click here to learn more.
