Illinois Central College Named Top Producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recently recognized Illinois Central College in its ranking of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2017-2018 Fulbright U.S. Scholars. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Top-producing institutions are highlighted annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

“ICC is honored to share this designation among the top-producing institutions nationwide,” said ICC President Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey. “The Fulbright Program has provided a vibrant, reciprocal exchange of knowledge and culture between the participants, and the faculty, staff and the students at ICC for more than 10 years.”

In the last five years, ICC has hosted six Fulbright-sponsored scholars. ICC Director of International Education Dr. Barbara Burton also was awarded a Fulbright grant for 2017-2018 and participated in the Community College Administrator Seminar (CCAS) study tour of Russia in April 2017. The CCAS program is a scholarship diplomacy initiative which helps to foster productive relationships and mutual respect.  This is an on-going program that allows the U.S. community college community to develop understanding and contacts in Russia for future programming, and also allows Russian counterparts to learn more about public higher education in the U.S.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, founded in 1946, is a program of the U.S. Department of State, funded by an annual appropriation from the U.S. Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

The Fulbright Program also awards grants to U.S. students and teachers to conduct research and teach overseas. In addition, some 4,000 foreign Fulbright students and scholars come to the United States annually to study, lecture, conduct research and teach foreign languages. The Fulbright Scholar Program is supported at ICC through the International Education Office.   For more information, contact Dr. Barbara Burton at (309) 694-8817 or Barbara.burton@icc.edu
