YWCA Little Free Library Ribbon Cutting

The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce congratulated the YWCA on the grand opening of their Little Free Library.  The Little Free Library is located on Buena Vista in front of the YWCA.  It is a Feeding Through Reading Imitative made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Coalition for Equality, a community outreach program of the YWCA of Pekin.

Funded by the Pekin Rotary Club, the library was built by Roy Johnson and decorated by Pekin Community High School art students.  The books were purchased through funding from the Pekin Kiwanis Club, AMBUCS, Pekin Altrusa Club, Y Reserves and many generous donors.

The YWCA has plans to install two more little free libraries in Pekin.

Goodwill of Central Illinois will hold the 5th Annual Recycle Your Style Contest. High school students within Goodwill’s territory are encouraged to donate their used clothing. The high school that donates the most pounds of clothing will win a SMART Board donated by Bradfield’s Computer Supply. The contest runs from October 1st through October 31st. “This has been a very successful campaign for us,” said Bob Parkhurst, Goodwill Vice President. “We are grateful for Bradfield’s Computer Supply’s donation of a SMART Board each year. That prize really heats up the competition among the high schools.” Donations of items other than clothing are encouraged, but only clothing will count toward the contest. Only high schools are eligible, but others can participate including teachers, family and school supporters. Methodist Offers Free Informational Heart Program

January 29, 2010 Methodist Medical Center is hosting a free “Coffee with the Doctor” on Saturday February 27, 2010 in observance of National Heart Month. Tahir Ilahi, M.D. of the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology will be making a presentation on “Cholesterol and Your Heart”. Registered Dietician Hannah Lee will also be on hand to demonstrate heart healthy meal preparation. “Coffee with the Doctor” will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology Conference Room at 112 NE.
