The name 'Ohana was chosen for the race because Hawaii
held a special place in Paul's heart. 'Ohana means "family"
in the broadest sense, not just those you are related to by ancestry
but those you choose to love as your own. Paul achieved many things
in his life, but family and friends were at the core of what he
loved. When it was clear his time was short, Paul asked
his 'Ohana to continue the mission to encourage others to get
screened early and be spared the loss and heartache that cancer
inflicts on its victims and their 'Ohana. Join us with your 'Ohana to
celebrate life and family as we stand up together to strengthen one
another in our fight against cancer.
Exactly How Many Spudnuts Does Tadough’s Make a Day? Feat: Tadough's Kitchen Managers Scott and Kevin Pekin, IL - By now you’ve seen the re-branding of our beloved Pekin classic: the spudnut. Taking place last March, the rebranding to “Tadough’s” sparked some big questions about Central Illinois’ favorite potato flour-based donut and the future of its legendary legacy. Here’s when Jacqueline and Rick enter the spudnut story. Last March Jacqueline saw opportunity when she heard the business was up for sale. An original Pekinite, Jacqueline and her father Rick are committed to maintaining the Pekin icon and want to bring a long-standing household name into the next generation of business development. “We’ve more than doubled our production of donuts made daily,” says Jacqueline . While the business has historically been known to sell out as early as 6:00 and 7:00 a.m., Jacqueline and Rick aim to keep doors open until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Rick,
Ever Dream of Opening a Bar? A #PekinRestaurantWeek Special Feature Pekin, IL- Chris, Eric, and Ryan didn’t. But a plot twist to a dream dating back over 14 years ago helped a vision become a reality in 2021: The Bunker Indoor Golf Lounge. What is an “indoor golf lounge” exactly? The Bunker hosts indoor, large-scale golf simulators: a big city offering in our Midwestern, small town of Pekin. Oh, and there’s a full-service bar to boot. “We’re really lucky to have great golf courses in Pekin, and now we can enjoy indoor golf too,” says part-owner Eric. Eric lays out the history of the idea and explains he has wanted to open a golf simulator hang-out spot for over a decade, but the technology- and price- just wasn’t there yet. Eric continues, “I toured a lot of simulators in the Chicago area and then was waiting for the right opportunity.” Eric and business partner Chris checked out many property locations over the years, including the old dance and tumbling building on
The Pekin Women's Leadership Network empowers women to become effective leaders by providing essential skills and strategies for professional and personal growth. A variety of carefully tailored programs are designed to support women in all phases of their careers. Why is this program needed? Although women have made great strides in achieving equality, a leadership gap continues. In 2013, 20 women serve in the Senate, and only 78 women serve in the House of Representative. Overall, women hold 98, or 18.3% of the 525 seats in the 113th U.S congress. Locally, the statistics are even worse, with only 1 woman serving on the Pekin City Council. The business world does not fare much better, with only 22 women CEO's in the Fortune 500. Our focus is on helping young women develop the skills and abilities necessary to succeed and flourish in their chosen career paths. Sessions scheduled for the 2013-2014 series include: November 1st - Women in Politics - Rep. Cheri Busto
