This economic strategy relies on central Illinois residents working together, inclusive of everyone and in a transparent manner to build trust. The strategy deploys a plan to retain and attract new business and grow an educated and trained workforce based on the region’s unique assets with measurements for success.
Leaders in this effort already identified Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Based goals (S.M.A.R.T.) for creating the new economic development strategy. They include: increasing population to 386,475 by 2017 from 2010 Census figures of 375,218. Also: creating more than 13,000 jobs; improving nearly 20,000 jobs by $5,000/ annually; ramping up the number of bachelor and graduate degrees; and increasing the 25-44 year-old age bracket from about 25 percent currently to 30 percent in 2017.
