ILLINOIS CENTRAL COLLEGE WORKSHOPS FOCUS ON PARENTING TODAY’S KIDS

Illinois Central College’s Professional Development Institute (PDI) will host several workshops aimed at providing parents the tools they need to parent children in specific age groups. “Your Parenting Tool Kit” workshops are facilitated by Lisa Gentry, a public school teacher and private practice counselor with more than 20 years of experience working with children and families.
The following workshops are scheduled for September and October with specific age groups in mind:
·        For parents of young children (up to age 5): Saturday, September 17  from 8:30 to 10:30 am
·        For parents of children (ages 6 to 9 years): Saturday, September 17  from 11 am to 1 pm
·        For parents of children (ages 10 to 12 years):  Saturday, October 15 from 8:30 to 10:30 am
·        For parents of children (ages 13-17 years): Saturday, October 15 from 11 am to 1 pm  
All classes will be held in Hickory Hall on the ICC North Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria.
Topics include: how to conduct a family meeting, why children misbehave, effective ways to communicate with your children, effective parenting styles, the difference between discipline and punishment, how to parent during difficult times, and much more.

Goodwill of Central Illinois will hold the 5th Annual Recycle Your Style Contest. High school students within Goodwill’s territory are encouraged to donate their used clothing. The high school that donates the most pounds of clothing will win a SMART Board donated by Bradfield’s Computer Supply. The contest runs from October 1st through October 31st. “This has been a very successful campaign for us,” said Bob Parkhurst, Goodwill Vice President. “We are grateful for Bradfield’s Computer Supply’s donation of a SMART Board each year. That prize really heats up the competition among the high schools.” Donations of items other than clothing are encouraged, but only clothing will count toward the contest. Methodist Offers Free Informational Heart Program

January 29, 2010 Methodist Medical Center is hosting a free “Coffee with the Doctor” on Saturday February 27, 2010 in observance of National Heart Month. Tahir Ilahi, M.D. of the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology will be making a presentation on “Cholesterol and Your Heart”. Registered Dietician Hannah Lee will also be on hand to demonstrate heart healthy meal preparation. “Coffee with the Doctor” will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology Conference Room at 112 NE.
