FREE - Stone Soup Shakespeare Presents Much Ado About Nothing
Sunday, May 31, 6:00 PM
Mineral Springs Park
Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing will be touring throughout the Midwest this spring, bringing Shakespeare in the Park to communities for free this May and early June and for the first time ever will be bringing the tour through Pekin, IL. The troupe will perform on Sunday, May 31 at Mineral Springs Park, next to the Pavilion on the Lagoon, at 6:00 PM in partnership with the Pekin Park District. In case of rain, the performance will take place inside the Pavilion.
Tour director, Jeri Frederickson (Chicago) is setting this year’s performance in a punk world filled with rock ‘n’ roll, miscommunication and rash emotions. Jeri Frederickson joins Stone Soup Shakespeare from Chicago and brings with her expertise in Shakespeare, poetry and new play development. She is excited to bring Much Ado About Nothing claiming “it delights and tickles my funny bone while also showing me just how outrageous perfectly rational people can be.”
The play itself has been recently popularized by director Joss Whedon in a black and white contemporary film. There also exists a slightly older, but much revered, 1993 version featuring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. While Frederickson and company’s interpretation will be its own unique look at the story, the merriment and deception of the script that is so present in the film versions is just as present in Stone Soup Shakespeare’s outdoor production.
In keeping with the spirit of the children’s story, Stone Soup, from which the company takes its name, audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, which will be collected and donated, to The HOPE Chest.
Much Ado About Nothing has been popularized multiple times in film (a much revered 1993 version featuring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson and a more recent black and white version directed by Joss Whedon). The story is the ultimate romantic comedy involving jealousy, deceit and ultimately love.
Don Pedro and Don John (siblings) have just finished fighting one another in a small war. Don Pedro, reconciled with her brother brings her troupes and Don John to Messina and the home of Leonato. There Count Claudio falls instantly in love with Leonato’s daughter Hero and they plan to get married. Benedick (another of Don Pedro’s men) is also in tow and revives a former battle of wits with Beatrice (Leonato’s niece). Don Pedro, Claudio, Hero and Leonato all decide to trick Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love. With antics and wedding plans on the brain all seems happy until Don John executes his revenge.
Don John tricks Claudio into thinking Hero is unfaithful to him and because of this Claudio cancels the wedding and exposes Hero’s presumed infidelity at the ceremony. Hero passes out, Leonato rages and Beatrice requests Benedick kill Claudio. With all the “ado” Detective Dogberry, head of Leonato’s Watch, is left to uncover what really happened. Eventually the Watch capture Don John’s henchman, report the wrongdoing and, through a bit of trickery and veils, all couples come together with promises of vows and reaffirmations of love.
The cast includes: Laila Abdo (Don Pedro), Kim Curlee (Leonato), Emily Green (Hero/Dogberry)(Millikin ’06), Ken Miller (Benedick)(Millikin ’10), Ryan Negron (Claudio), Julia Stemper (Beatrice), Brittany Stock (Margaret/Priest) and Dan Wenzel, Jr. (Don John).

STONE SOUP SHAKESPEARE
Jeffrey
Golde and Julia Stemper founded Stone Soup Shakespeare in 2010. Its mission is to bring free professional
theater to areas without access to it.
Developed during Ms. Stemper’s time studying at the Royal Scottish
Academy of Music and Drama, the company continues to present theater events in
both the US and UK. Stone Soup’s first
tour was a production of Romeo and Juliet
in 2011. It was seen in 3 states during
a one-week tour and included professional actors from England, Scotland, New
York, Chicago and the Southern Illinois region who have appeared off-Broadway,
Regionally and on National and International tours. The subsequent tours have expanded the
company’s reach and artistic partners, increased audience size and expanded its
educational programs.
The 2015 tour is partially supported by the
Carbondale Community Arts Southern Arts Fund and by the Illinois Arts Council,
a state agency.

Do You Have The Heart Of A Business Leader?
© Can Stock Photo Inc. / airdone
Many years ago I was given the book “Heart of a Leader.” It’s
a very small book, the kind of thing you can read quickly. I have used that
book for the past 17 years, and as small as it is, I learn something every time
I open it. It’s a very good book for business owners and I wanted to
share some things I’ve learned from the book. Each of the following quotes was
taken from it.
“When you stop learning you stop
growing”
This was a good one to start with. Every day I learn something,
and I love it. Whether it is something on the computer, Facebook, Twitter, or
from the many books that I read, I love to learn something new. In today’s
business climate, you have to keep learning because things are changing so
rapidly. If you’re not staying current with technology and the methods of
communication, you are quickly losing your competitive edge.
When you stop learning you’re done. Norman Vincent Peale once
said, “When I stop learning, I might as well lie down and die.” When I retired
from Wal-Mart in 2010 I had all these visions of not doing anything. I soon
realized my inactivity, and not using my brain to the extent I did in business,
was affecting me mentally. So I went back to work. I’m not saying you shouldn’t
retire but when/if you do you should never stop learning.
“Leadership is a high calling”
As leaders we sometimes focus too hard on results at the
detriment of the people involved. If that is your leadership style, things like
morale and job satisfaction will fall by the wayside. This type of leadership
becomes about getting as much as you can for as little effort as possible.
Leading at a higher level is the process of achieving worthwhile
results while acting with respect, care, and fairness for the well-being of all
involved. It’s only when you realize it’s not about you that you began to
lead at a higher level.
“What we give our attention to
grows”
Finally, the more attention you pay to a behavior, the more it
will be repeated. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. If you dwell in
negativity that is what you will reap because focusing on the negative often
creates situations that demoralize people. When people feel demoralized, they
live up to your low vision of them.
Accentuating the positive and redirecting the negative are the
best tools for increasing productivity. When good performance is followed by a
positive response, people naturally want to continue that behavior.
What was the best leadership advice you’ve ever received? The
quotes and lessons that stick make us who we are as leaders. Try to adopt more
of the positive and less of the negative traits and your employees will work
harder and spend more time delighting your customers.

as a store manager for Walmart, a position he values as teaching him a lot
about customer service.

How To Be A Better Leader
© Can Stock Photo Inc. / harishmarnad
I’ve compiled some of the most valuable leadership lessons I’ve
learned over my career and I wanted to share them with you.
Communicate All that You Know
The best place to start is “communicate all that you know.” In
my lifetime I have seen two types of leaders; one keeps all his knowledge to himself,
and in turn doesn’t want the team to leave him, and doesn’t encourage them to
go to the next level. The second, and I hope I was this type of leader,
communicates all he knows. The biggest thrill in my life was to see people get
promoted. I am happy to say that many assistant managers on my Wal-Mart team
went on to become store managers. At the chamber the same thing has happened,
many of our folks have gone on to great jobs, and although I really wanted them
to stay, I was very proud that they were taking the next step to a better
career.
Love Your Work
If you love your work, you’ll be out there every day trying to
do it the best you possibly can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch
the passion from you – like a fever. I have been so fortunate in my work
career. The chamber is my third career, and like my career as a retailer, a
store manager, and now an executive director, I can honestly say I loved all
three jobs. Some had more stress then others, but I live for the challenge and
all three gave me plenty of challenges.
Business owners are fortunate because these entrepreneurs have
created something they love and it feels less like work. Pass that passion onto
your employees and your business will thrive.
Speak to People
Speak to people coming towards you before they speak to you. I
always look ahead and speak to the person coming toward me. If I knew them I
would call them by name, but even if I didn’t I would still speak to them. I
was at St. Vincent’s Hospital a couple of weeks ago walking down a hallway, and
a gentlemen was walking towards me. I didn’t know him, but I said, “Good
morning.” He returned the sentiment and then asked, “Are you lost?” I was. We
both laughed and I said, “Yes I am looking for the elevator.” He showed me the
directions to the elevator and we then struck up a conversation about Erie
which led to Bradford, and I found out he was doctor at St. Vincent’s. I felt
really good after our talk and went on my way.
Try it on Monday morning, and let me know how it goes.
If you adopt the idea of never meeting a stranger, and you greet
everyone with a warm reception, you might be pleasantly surprised by the
opportunities that open to you.

Tips to Starting a Business
Image via: morgueFile / flashbuddy
“I want to go into business.”
I hear that all the time, and I get excited when someone wants
to invest in the community. So here’s my best advice on starting a business.
Location, Location, Location
First you need to consider location. I remember reading that the
three most important things in opening a business are location, location and
location.
Make sure you do your homework and pick the best spot. Years
ago, I was a part owner in a men’s store on Main Street, and it was a perfect
location, plenty of foot traffic, high visibility, in the center of it all.
Know Your Business (Plan)
Next is a business plan. This is very important to being
successful. With all the information available on the internet you should be
able to get all the data that you need to put together a plan, or you can
contact the Small Business Development Center at your local college or
university. Most are happy to assist you in putting together a business plan.
If your community has a small business or economic development
organization, visit their website and check out their resources. Some offer
classes as well.
Choose Wisely
Next, and I think this is the most important, is hiring the
right people and teaching them great customer service.
I talk a lot about taking care of your customers. There was a
video store on Main Street that only hired people who smiled. That’s the right
approach – pick people with a positive attitude, and they will make you
successful.
A
Story of Outstanding Customer Service
I love to tell stories because they’re memorable. This is one of
my favorites. A business woman went into a restaurant in New York City, and a
young male waiter waited on her. When he asked what she would like drink, she
said, “I know you don’t have RC Cola, so I will just have a Pepsi or Coke.” She
also ordered her meal at the same time. The young man went back to the kitchen
and gave the order to the cook, and said he had to run out to the grocery store
next to the restaurant and he would be right back. He proudly had the RC Cola
on the tray with a glass of ice, and the customer was very surprised. She asked
him where he had gotten it, and he told her the story. Every time she came back
to the city, she went to that restaurant and asked for the young man to wait on
her. A few months later, she was in New York again but her favorite waiter was
gone – he had gotten his own restaurant! And you can be sure she became a
patron of that one too.
Good customer service makes you stand out. People want to do
business with you and you can parlay that customer loyalty into a million
different opportunities.
Isn’t that a great story? Those are the kind of things you
should be doing for your customers.

NASDAQ Awards Heartland Bank the Innovation in Financial Education Award
NASDAQ
Awards Heartland Bank
the Innovation in Financial Education Award
Heartland Bank and Trust
Company was recently honored with the Innovation in Financial Education Award presented by
NASDAQ and EverFi. The award recognizes its significant efforts to
improve the financial capability of young Americans. Twenty-five financial institutions were honored with this
distinction at a ceremony hosted at NASDAQ’s Marketsite headquarters in New
York City.
Honorees were selected based on a set of criteria that included
the scale and reach of their financial education initiatives, the duration of
their commitment, and unique employee volunteering activities that supplement
their programs.
“NASDAQ is committed to fostering innovation and economic growth,
and the institutions we’re recognizing here today have led exceptional efforts
to rethink how financial education is taught in our nation’s schools,” said
NASDAQ Executive Vice President Nelson Griggs. “Our global competitiveness is
dependent on the next generation understanding how the economy works and how to
achieve financial security in their lives. We are grateful to the organizations
that are helping pave a brighter future for students today.”
As young adults are faced with increasingly complex financial
decisions, Heartland Bank is committed to providing students with the skills
and knowledge needed in order to succeed. Heartland Bank has partnered with
EverFi to bring the financial education program to local students at no cost to
schools or taxpayers and has reached over 4,628 students since 2012.
The web-based program uses the latest in new media technology – simulations,
gaming and adaptive-pathing – to bring complex financial concepts to life for
today’s digital generation.
The
Heartland Bank Money Matters Program provides the foundation for a better life
for kids and their families, as they learn to avoid financial choices that they
may encounter in the future. “We are committed to serving local residents
by using our resources and our voices to advocate on their behalf. These
outreach efforts reflect our community bank heritage and demonstrate our community-wide
allegiance,” said Heartland Bank Chief Executive Officer, Fred Drake.
A FINRA-funded study released in February 2015 found that students
who received rigorous financial education in high school saw increased credit
scores and decreased chance of credit delinquency as young adults, compared to
their peers who did not receive financial education. Data collected from nearly 1,839 students who completed the Heartland Bank Money
Matters in the 2013-2014 academic year revealed that
students’ understanding of credit scores increased by an average 30%
after interacting with the curriculum.
Administered by teachers in a classroom setting, the web-based
course offers over six hours of programming on a variety of financial topics
including credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages,
taxes, stocks, savings, 401k’s and other critical concepts that map to national
financial literacy standards. The platform uniquely tracks the progress and
performance of every student.

Illinois American Water Launches Facebook Photo Contest during National Drinking Water Week to Support local Firefighters
Illinois American Water announced today that
several local volunteer fire departments will have the opportunity to earn
funds through a Company sponsored social media photo contest. The contest is
being launched during National Drinking Water Week, May 3-9, 2015 to highlight
the role drinking water plays in critical fire protection.
The social media contest supports this year’s National Drinking Water Week’s theme, “What do you know about H2O?” because it brings awareness to the role drinking water plays in fire protection. According to Illinois American Water President, Bruce Hauk, customers may be surprised to learn that Illinois American Water tests and maintains every fire hydrant – over 29,000 – across the Illinois American Water system.
Hauk said, “We are proud of the role our team plays in ensuring public safety and we value the partnerships we have with local firefighters. This contest is another opportunity to give back to our local heroes.”
The public is invited to vote for their favorite photo today through May 15, 2015 at www.facebook.com/ilamwater. The organizations participating are listed below along with their Illinois American Water service area:
