The 14th Annual Children’s Garden “Child Abuse Prevention Month” Event

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month and our 365 days of the year effort to prevent child abuse, The Center for Prevention of Abuse and Luthy Botanical Garden are joining Ms. Winternitz’s 1st grade class from Harrison Learning Center to learn about preventing abuse through caring for ourselves, each other and the environment.

Activities will take place between 9:30 am – 11:30 am and include how to be safe from abuse, enjoying a story, planting vegetables and flowers, making crafts and participating in "Natures Kitchen", an educational session offered by Luthy Botanical Garden that teaches children where food comes from.

The Center offers curricula in safe touch, violence prevention, behavioral skills training, sexual assault/abuse prevention and healthy relationships to students pre-k through college touching the lives of 15,000 students per/year. Goodwill of Central Illinois will hold the 5th Annual Recycle Your Style Contest. High school students within Goodwill’s territory are encouraged to donate their used clothing. The high school that donates the most pounds of clothing will win a SMART Board donated by Bradfield’s Computer Supply. The contest runs from October 1st through October 31st. “This has been a very successful campaign for us,” said Bob Parkhurst, Goodwill Vice President. “We are grateful for Bradfield’s Computer Supply’s donation of a SMART Board each year. That prize really heats up the competition among the high schools.” Donations of items other than clothing are encouraged, but only clothing will count toward the contest. Methodist Offers Free Informational Heart Program

January 29, 2010 Methodist Medical Center is hosting a free “Coffee with the Doctor” on Saturday February 27, 2010 in observance of National Heart Month. Tahir Ilahi, M.D. of the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology will be making a presentation on “Cholesterol and Your Heart”. Registered Dietician Hannah Lee will also be on hand to demonstrate heart healthy meal preparation. “Coffee with the Doctor” will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology Conference Room at 112 NE.
