Cedarhurst of Pekin

Celebrates a Centennial

Pekin, IL- Pekin celebrates another centennial this month with the 100th birthday of Dorothea of Cedarhurst Living. Dorothea was born on October 3, 1922. Friends from coast to coast gathered this month to celebrate the occasion, reminiscing on decades of memories with “Dot”.

Dot was born at home in Mason County in 1922. While spending 42 winters in Florida, Dot considers Central Illinois her home. At 19 years old she was prompted to take a civil service test, scoring high enough she was immediately whisked up to Chicago where she then met her husband Lawrence at a rooftop garden dance. They married in 1946, going to raise two boys: Gary and Wallace.

Friends remark Dot is an exceptional person. She worked for 35 years as the secretary to the Assistant Director of the National Center for Agriculture Utilization Research in Peoria, known locally as simply “the AG lab”. She also traveled extensively, noting her favorite destination as Switzerland.

Dot’s secret to 100+ years is simple in her opinion: stay active. Biking regularly, Dot tackled the hills of Glen Oak Park for decades. And, in her two and a half years of residency at Cedarhurst Living in Pekin, she can still be seen on the stationary bike every morning. Dot remarks while she has not been a lifelong Pekin residence, her home at Cedarhurst brings the sense of security she wants and a whole lot of activities to keep her active mind going.

Dot was asked to reflect on her life and what changes still strike her at 100. Her answer was quick, saying the number of women driving still amazes her. Having lived through history most of us will only ever read about, she asks that young people find a way to value American freedoms and keep the country going.

Dot’s family was asked to share the impact she has made on their lives. Gathered friends and family simply say,”She is the most kind, loving, patient person; always concerned about others. She’s a great remodel. We love her.”

Cedarhurst Senior Living invites Pekin area residents to send a Happy 100th Birthday Card to Dorothea. Cards can be mailed to Attn: Dot, 2700 14th Street, Pekin, IL 61554.
