Pekin Municipal Airport Continues Revitalization
Pekin Municipal Airport Continues Revitalization
With continued growth and direct economic impact to the Pekin community, the Pekin Municipal Airport has become a focal point of revitalization efforts.
Pekin, IL- The City of Pekin is focusing on revitalization
efforts as hangar tenancy and traffic continue to grow at Pekin Municipal Airport.
The airport recently underwent a renovation of the 24-hour
lounge area: a first impression of Central Illinois to many visitors. Until
Spring of 2022, the lounge was still outfitted with the original interior furnishing
from the 1960s. The space was redesigned to offer an additional seating area
with charging ports for smart devices, as well as a modern kitchenette. Fresh
paint and installation of new lighting have also been completed. The overall aesthetic
promotes a welcoming environment for corporate and recreational flyers utilizing
the small airport.
Pekin Municipal Airport has received significant recognition
over the past few years. The facility recently was awarded $1.8 million from
the Rebuild Illinois Capital Grant, funding 90% of the project cost to replace fuel
tanks which had reached the end of their useful life. The grant award has also
been applied to an access road extension in preparation for new t-hangar
construction.
An economic impact analysis created by Illinois Aviation
System Plan and IDOT shows the Pekin Municipal
Airport now generates about $9.3 million annually, a figure which has nearly tripled
from five to six years ago. About $8.7 million of this income comes directly
from on-airport activity. The Airport offers low fuel costs and no landing or
tie-down fees, encouraging daily operations from recreational flyers, medical
and law enforcement use, as well as corporate flying associated with Pekin’s
Riverway Business Park and industrial businesses.
“The Airport is positioning itself to be one of the premier General Aviation Airports in the state for the foreseeable future,” says Dugan.
About Pekin Municipal Airport- Located
just south of Pekin city limits, the Pekin Municipal Airport serves the local
business community as well as the General Aviation Community. It is also part
of the National Airspace System. The Airport currently hosts about 50 tenants
as well as a private aircraft mechanic company: Keith Aero. The Airport also
supports the Pekin community by hosting the annual Wings and Wheels event on
the third weekend of September. For more
