Pekin Public Library Hosts Candidate Forum

Pekin, IL- Citizens of Pekin are invited to attend the mayoral and city council candidate events at the Pekin Public Library on Thursdays, March 9th and March 23rd from 6-8:00 p.m. These events are an opportunity for voters to learn more about candidates themselves and to hear discussions on relevant issues.   


The first event held Thursday, March 9th was moderated by the League of Women’s Voters. This has been an informal opportunity for the candidates to speak on themselves. Playbacks of the livestream Candidate Forum are available below.


The Candidate Discussion takes place Thursday, March 23rd and will be moderated by Chris Kaergard of the Dirksen Congressional Center. As an interactional opportunity on relevant community issues, the event will feature city council candidates from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with mayoral candidates to follow. Questions will include submissions from constituency in attendance.  


All mayoral and city council candidates have been invited to the events. Mayoral candidates include Mary J. Burress, Becky Cloyd and David B. Nutter. City Council candidates are John Abel, Joshua L. Hafliger, Rick Hilst, Karen Hohimer, Robert Jaskiewicz, Matthew Johnson, Jacob Brisbin, and Jim Mangan. 


A collective group of community-minded individuals and organizations have come together to coordinate these events. The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce will promote the events, the Pekin Public Library will host the events, Michelle Bohm of the League of Women Voters and Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman will assist with production, along with community members Tiffany White and Shannon Sandoval.

Goodwill of Central Illinois will hold the 5th Annual Recycle Your Style Contest. High school students within Goodwill’s territory are encouraged to donate their used clothing. The high school that donates the most pounds of clothing will win a SMART Board donated by Bradfield’s Computer Supply. The contest runs from October 1st through October 31st. “This has been a very successful campaign for us,” said Bob Parkhurst, Goodwill Vice President. “We are grateful for Bradfield’s Computer Supply’s donation of a SMART Board each year. That prize really heats up the competition among the high schools.” Donations of items other than clothing are encouraged, but only clothing will count toward the contest. Methodist Offers Free Informational Heart Program

January 29, 2010 Methodist Medical Center is hosting a free “Coffee with the Doctor” on Saturday February 27, 2010 in observance of National Heart Month. Tahir Ilahi, M.D. of the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology will be making a presentation on “Cholesterol and Your Heart”. Registered Dietician Hannah Lee will also be on hand to demonstrate heart healthy meal preparation. “Coffee with the Doctor” will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Medical Group Cardiology Conference Room at 112 NE.
