Dedication of SSGT Paul Smith Memorial Highway Scheduled for this Wednesday

EVENT DETAILS

WHAT: Road Dedication Ceremony

WHO: Representative Mike Unes, Senator Dave Koehler, Mayor Dave Mingus, and Smith Family

WHERE: East Peoria Festival Building Parking Lot, 2200 E. Washington St., East Peoria   61611

WHEN: 10-10:30AM

Description:  SSGT Paul Smith of East Peoria was killed in 2009 in Afghanistan during a volunteer mission when an IED exploded near his vehicle.  A resolution to rename in his honor a portion of East Peoria’s Rte. 8 was introduced in the Illinois House by Representative Mike Unes and in the Senate by Senator Dave Koehler, whereupon it passed the full General Assembly.  This event will serve to commemorate the newly re-named portion of this road.

Signs will be erected by IDOT on Tuesday, June 21st: East Bound at Arnold/ Meadow and West Bound at IL8/ Oakwood.  They will be uncovered by the family after the conclusion of the 10AM ceremony.

This event is open to the public, who are both invited and encouraged to attend in support of SSGT Paul Smith’s family.
